In recent decades, the Virginia wine industry has made enormous strides and has had major economic benefits for the state as it has received global recognition for the quality of wines being produced. In 2012, there were over 230 wineries in Virginia, with this number continuing to grow exponentially. The wine industry has progressed far from the early seventeenth century where the attempts for vine growth and wine production saw only failure. Nearly two centuries of unsuccessful attempts clouded the history of the Virginia wine industry in the beginning, which has since transformed into an internationally recognized wine region. In addition to the growth of the industry from wine production, wineries have become central locations for events, including: fairs and festivals, weddings, concerts, historical tours and reenactments, and more.
